That color change does not automatically make sterling silver unsafe. The part that passes through your ear matters more than the decorative front. Check whether an S925 claim covers the post and back instead of assuming the stamp describes every component.

Copper and brass

Copper darkens in air. Brass can tarnish because it contains copper. Fingerprints, moisture, salts, and products left on the surface can speed up the change. Copper alloys may also develop green residue.
